Normal Body Composition Percentage: Including Fatty Tissue, Muscle Tissue, Bone Mass & WaterBody WeightBody Weight - What Does it Consist of?In a healthy woman of average weight, fat makes up 27 percent of total body weight, muscle about 35 percent and skeleton about 12 percent. In a healthy male of average weight, the breakdown of total body weight is roughly 15 percent fat, 45 percent muscle and 15 percent skeleton. The remaining body weight, in both cases, is accounted for by blood plasma, skin, connective tissue, tendons, organs, hair and so on. Body Weight and WaterWater accounts for about 70 percent of the total body weight of an average person. Muscle is roughly 75 percent water, 20 percent protein and 5 percent minerals and other matter. Body fat and bones are roughly 50 cent water. Body Weight and BonesOn average, the skeleton accounts for a relatively minor amount of total body weight. For example, bone weight in a woman of 160 pounds is only about 19.2 pounds, while a 200 pound man has only about 30 pounds of weight in his bones. So while weight does vary with bone size or bone density, we can't really blame our bones for our weight problem. See also: |
