Diet Pills - Because Pills are Supposed to be Easier than Diets!
Following a weight loss diet requires patience, organization and self-discipline. In addition, healthy, sustained weight control also requires regular exercise. For many overweight people, this approach to weight loss is too slow. They want to lose weight faster and with less effort.
Diet Pills - Weight Gain Instead of Fast Weight Loss
Unfortunately, diet pills and supplements cannot deliver fast weight loss. Even if they do, it is not fat loss - it's mainly water loss, which the body usually replaces immediately.
This is why clinical trials of diet pills never demonstrate lasting weight loss through pills alone.
Worse still, diet pills can mess up your metabolism, upset your appetite and lead to fast weight gain.
Diet Pills - Fat-Burners Unproven
Some diet pills claim to burn so much extra fat that they help you to lose weight. Sadly, this claim of miraculous weight loss remains unproven. Any fat-burning effects are usually too small to help you lose weight.
Diet Pills - Appetite Suppressants Unproven
Some diet pills claim to reduce your appetite, either by over stimulating your system or by filling your stomach. But usually, these diet pills are no more effective than fat-burners. Disrupting your normal metabolic rate, or filling your stomach with a bulking agent, does not lead to sustained, healthy weight loss. Also, the idea that overweight people have a slow metabolism is a complete myth. In fact the heavier you are, the harder your body has to work to carry the weight and the greater your metabolic rate. The only exceptions are people with conditions such as hypothyroidism, for whom diet pills are equally unproven.
Diet Pills - Dangers of Overdose
As stated, some diet pills boost your metabolism in order to reduce appetite or burn extra calories. These amphetamine-type diet pills were popular 30-40 years ago, until doctors realized that they could be addictive and harmful. Few people managed to diet successfully and keep weight off with them, and many became physically hooked. Today's diet pills may cause similar dangers. Doses of these diet pills which are sufficient to cause weight loss (albeit temporary weight loss) can also cause tremors, severe headaches, heart palpitations and high blood pressure. This is exacerbated by the fact that many diet pills are not labelled with amounts of active weight loss ingredients, so knowing how much of a drug or diet agent you're getting can be impossible.
Diet Pills - Double Whammy Supplements
Some diet pills combine two or more active ingredients for maximum 'weight loss' effect. This can sometimes cause serious health risks. For example, ephedrine (ephedra, ma huang) is a potent and potentially lethal ingredient in many herbal diet pills. It has been linked to more than 800 incidents, including heart attacks and deaths. Yet some diet pills and supplements with ephedine also contain a caffeine-type ingredient called guarana. Taken by itself, guarana is probably not dangerous, but it boosts the power of ephedrine to potentially dangerous levels.
Diet Pills - Dangers of Dependency
Amphetamine-type diet pills and other types of diet supplements can cause withdrawal symptoms that induce dependency. You can become hooked. In some cases, individuals have remained on diet pills for years with long term health effects.
Diet Pills - Obesity Levels
The idea that diet pills make fat disappear is seductive. But in practice, such weight loss is illusory. The fact is, despite spending millions of dollars on diet pills, diet supplements and other weight loss medications, obesity rates continue to soar. 58 million Americans are overweight; 40 million are obese and 3 million suffer from life-threatening obesity. Furthermore, 8 out of 10 over 25's are overweight and there has been a 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 yrs old since 1990.
Diet Pills and Supplements are Not Shortcuts
"There are no shortcuts - no magic pills," says Lori Love, M.D., Ph.D., of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Losing weight sensibly and safely requires a multifaceted approach that includes setting reasonable weight-loss goals, changing eating habits, and getting adequate exercise. Diet pills, supplements, appetite suppressants, "fat-burners" or other products may help some people over the short term, but they are not a substitute for adopting healthful eating habits over the long term.
